Tell me something about you and artistic background.
I was born 1961 in Düsseldorf and grew up in this city located by the wonderful river „Rhein“, a very important influence for my life. In the age of 16 I began to make small super-8 films with my father's camera. I also started to draw and make experiments with different materials like plaster or sounds on tape. My art teacher, the Photographer Volker Jenny (he died early in the age of 47) supported my work and my decision to study art at the academy of art in Düsseldorf. My professor was the German sculptor Karl Bobek . After a long way of making sculptures, I made a video documentation about my exihbition in the Arthaus Essen,1993. This was a new beginning found space..
Tell me about this film, initial idea and work process.
I developed „Raumsonde“ (http://lunarprobe.blogspot.com) for a short film competition. It was part of the Beethoven Festival in Bonn 2009. One of the given keywords was „Moon“. I tried to connect my formerly short and autonomous video-sound-pieces and created a dramatically structure without narration. The creative athmosphere during full moon is the topic of this 6 minutes. The small parts of making a drawing are new elements, the gesture of an intensive process - to make a video is to draw with moving lights and sounds. The jury of the Beethoven Festival refused my work. Now I am lucky that you want to show my „Raumsonde“ in Oslo.
Are you working on new projects at the moment?
I work every time on new projects. A short time ago I finished a 5 minute video with the title „AWIE“ (http://awieatem.blogspot.com). It is an continuation of „Raumsonde“. Now I prepare a new video for my sound-portrait-series. It becomes poetical documentation about 3 violinmakers in Germany.
Do you have specific influences in your film/video making?
Important filmmakers for me are: Brakhage, Kubelka, Tati and Lynch.
Why is it important for you to show your film/video in a festival?
I want to infect the audience with my sense.
What role do you think Oslo Screen Festival should have to promote your work?
I hope the technical circumstances are optimal for the performance. This is the basis. I have no other expectations.
